5 Tips To Stay Motivated To Eat Healthy
In my experience offering wellness and nutrition support to brides-to-be… I’ve seen a pattern start to emerge amongst my clients:
You were feeling amazing, inspired, motivated… ready to take on the world, start the new eating plan, start cooking more, start exercising more, get to sleep earlier, DO ALL THE THINGS in preparation for feeling and looking amazing on your wedding day.
Then, out of nowhere, you kinda just… lost it. You got busy. Your photographer fell through. The florist you wanted was out of budget. Your to-do list got longer. You got stressed.
You lost the motivation to prioritize your self care; going back to your comfy, familiar ways became so much easier.
I know this, because I’ve been through it myself. Not so much when it comes to food and exercise these days, but I can tell you that sometimes I’m “too tired” or “too stressed” or “don’t have the time” to meditate for 5 minutes in the morning, or do a 10 minute at-home yoga video to center myself. Sometimes I just can’t muster the willingness to sit and journal, even though I know I always feel so much better when it’s done.
Motivation is fleeting, and I think this is true for everyone. Something can feel really really exciting, but once the adrenaline wears off and you’re left with the reality of the task you’ve taken on, how do you keep going?
Here are some of the ways I’ve been able to keep going, keep holding myself accountable, and keep showing up, even when my motivation dips:
Stay present
Your motivation to work out 4 days a week in the mornings before work is going to seem really overwhelming when you’re exhausted on morning 2 and can’t imagine having to do this again tomorrow and the next day. Take it one day at a time - you can’t change anything about the future in the present moment, so why stress about it?
Make the decision
It sounds simple, but in reality, a lot of us are fearful of making a firm decision, so we don’t really ever decide. Being decisive is really hard - what if we choose the wrong thing? What if we regret it? What if we can’t do it? It takes a lot of your energy to pingpong back and forth, and it feels SO good to simply decide to do something and to follow through.
Be mindful of who you surround yourself with
Misery loves company, so be aware of the people who support you growing into your best self vs. the people who are threatened/jealous/fearful and bring you down. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, who support the decisions you’re making, and who want to see you grow. This can be a tough one, especially right now, but consider this… the people who are in support of you making the decision to look and feel your best are the very people who will be genuinely happy for you on your wedding day - and if you ask me, these are the people you want to celebrate with and spend the most special day of your life surrounded by.
Vow to cook at least one meal a day
Especially if you’re not used to cooking yet, you can’t expect yourself to go from 0 to 100 overnight. So choose at least one meal to cook, every day, and have fun with it. Turn on some music, take out your ingredients, take a breather from your screens, and enjoy the act of cooking a nourishing meal for yourself.
Finally, remember that you’re human, and that it’s okay to feel unmotivated, tired, lazy, uninspired, or not in the mood. Remember that if you’re comparing yourself to other people’s progress, you’re placing an unfair expectation on yourself (and, duh, but most people aren’t sharing openly about the hard days. If we’re talking social media, especially… don’t forget it’s a highlight reel.)
The real growth comes when you can have a hard day without letting it spiral into days, then weeks, then months. I hope the steps above help you jump back in if you’ve been feeling unmotivated… and if you’re wanting to really take it to the next level, have someone to hold you accountable, and have the support of a constant cheerleader, I’m your girl!
