What Does Wellness Look Like To You?

Hanna Sender founder of Bride and Bliss

As I continue down this entrepreneurial road as a bridal nutrition and wellness specialist, I keep getting smacked in the face with the reminder that if we’re not doing something that truly feels in alignment with who we are, what we believe in, and what we desire - we simply won’t enjoy it.

And I’ve been thinking a lot about this when it comes to health and wellness. There’s an idealized version of what it means, and looks like, to be healthy: working out all the time, making picture perfect meals every day, having zero fat on our bodies, looking flawless in yoga pants. And that’s great! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. But lately I’ve found myself thinking: this can’t be true for everyone. And that’s made me start to wonder - if this specific picture of “good health” doesn’t resonate with people… does it keep them from pursuing what their version looks like?

So - I want you to ask yourself what wellness actually looks like to you. Not to the perfect girls with the perfect meals on Instagram. Not to the coworker who wakes up at 5am every day to go to the gym. Not to the friend with the tiny thighs and toned, flat stomach.

What does it look like to YOU? What does it MEAN for you? Is it sleeping better? Having more energy? Having clear skin? Losing 10 pounds? Actually enjoying yourself when you go jeans shopping? (Or wedding dress shopping!) Is it simply showing up more fully in the world - with confidence in the version of yourself you're presenting?

It’s so easy to get discouraged, or feel like you’re doing something wrong, if you’re not achieving the picture perfect version of health and wellness. But what if that was never your real goal to begin with? What if that’s not your truth? For example: I feel burnt out when I do high intensity exercises multiple times a week, even though there are countless articles, accounts, and influencers telling me I should feel great. But what makes ME feel great is doing those types of workouts once or twice a week, and doing restorative at home yoga or walking on the other days. My meals are not always beautiful and photo-worthy; but they are delicious and they nourish me.

It’s about tuning in to what you actually want, and to how you actually feel and/or want to feel. Your intuition and your own body’s signals are what you should be listening to - and if the message you’re receiving differs from the picture you had in your head, that’s okay. Sit with it. Try it on for size. The best version of yourself might not look like the best version of someone else - and the more you try to emulate someone else’s goals and journey, the quicker you’ll find there’s no real joy in it for you.

Chasing a vision that's not really yours is a surefire path to burnout.

So I’d encourage you to put the blinders on and ask yourself: "What's MY vision for myself? What does wellness look like to ME?"

I’d love to hear if this resonated with you and what you discovered by asking yourself these questions!
